New Jersey
This week has been an adventure in writing! I realized as I sat down to write this that it's the first time I've attempted to write a poem in nearly ten years. I decided to start my adventure in poetry with my grandparents' home where all of my summer travels always began. Pictures will follow later this week!
Juliustown, New Jersey
A veneer of new lies thin on aged walls.
Warm, comforting and familiar
generations of smiling faces line the halls.
Vague memories of childhood;
the soft creek of the narrow stairs
sturdily built azure painted wood
take me to a place filled with past cares.
Dusty, musty and old things are laid down.
Long forgotten books, tattered by years,
the yellowing lace of my mother's wedding gown.
Holidays peek from boxes, tinsel tears
leaking from their edges.
The distant sound of a morning dove pass
through the lone window on a warm breeze
carrying the aroma of fresh cut grass
the sweet smell of honeysuckle ease
the humid scent of wet asphalt
after a mid-summer storm.
You did a beautiful job of painting the picture of you grandparent's home and all of it's combined memories and associations. The sense of nostalgia this poem creates is rich and comforting.
